5 Marijuana Dispensary Supplies You Might be Missing

Marijuana is being legalized in states all around the country. There are now 33 states that allow it for medical use, and 10 have approved recreational use. This trend is likely to continue, now that more than 60 percent of people in the US support legalization.

The cannabis industry is expected to grow by 21 percent every year over the next three years, reaching $23 billion in annual revenue by 2021. It’s no wonder that more entrepreneurs want to get in on the act.

A dispensary can average about $3 million per year in revenue – a level shared by only 9 percent of small businesses outside the industry. But whether you reach that level, surpass it, or fall short depends on how prepared you are to meet the needs of your customers.

Packaging and Safety Supplies Your Dispensary Needs

To earn the respect and loyalty of your customer base, you need to present a product that is professionally packaged and labeled. Nothing looks more amateurish than a retail item that’s been presented carelessly.

So before you start selling, make sure you have these five items in your stockroom.

1.  Flower storage jars, various sizes

For a marijuana dispensary to merchandise effectively, its products have to appeal to as many senses as possible. That means you want your customers to be able to:

  1. See the product in front of them,
  2. Hear you describe it,
  3. Imagine the taste, and last but not least,
  4. Literally stop and smell the flowers.

You probably don’t want customers touching your leaf, but at least they can shake your hand and feel the sturdiness of the jar as you hold it out.

To maximize the power of these experiences, get yourself some well-made polystyrene jars with locking lids for safety.

2. Child-resistant containers

States with legalized medical or recreational marijuana tend to require dispensaries to use child-resistant packaging. According to the Poison Preventing Packaging Act, that means:

  • It must be difficult for a child under the age of 5 to open the container or obtain a dangerous amount of its contents, but
  • A typical adult should be able to use the container as intended.

When this rule applies to marijuana products, several states also mandate that:

  • The packaging is designed so that the product is not visible from the outside
  • Multi-use packages are resealable
  • The package is labeled according to state law

Even if your state doesn’t mandate child-resistant packaging, it’s still a good idea. It says that you value safety and have your customers’ best interests in mind.

3. Exit bags

These are the second line of defense when it comes to child resistance. They have to be resealable, opaque, and child resistant. Dispensaries in California have to put every purchase in exit bags until at least early 2020, at which point many customers will have grown used to them. If you want to be prepared for the future, high-quality exit bags are good investments.

4. Labeling Supplies

State packaging laws also include requirements for product labeling, and every dispensary needs to make sure that its products comply. In Colorado, for example, labels for edibles must include:

  • A Universal Symbol indicating marijuana
  • A Nutrition Facts Panel
  • Serving size and consumption risk information
  • A disclosure of intoxication effects and potential health risks
  • A full list of product ingredients

Selling marijuana products without the required labeling is illegal, so make sure you have plenty of appropriate labels on hand.

5. Accessories

When customers visit your store, do you want them to walk out with everything they need or do you want them to make a second stop at someone else’s store? To be a complete source for marijuana products, you’ll need to stock accessories.

If you really want to draw people in, consider stocking smoking and vaping accessories in your dispensary. Customers who walk out with just the bud will still need to go somewhere else to buy their accessories, so why not offer them what they need at your store?

Order a vaporizer, a full vape kit, or a classy twist blunt. Display them on your counter and you get not only an up-sell for your customers, but also a great addition to your merchandising strategy.
